Ready for a new OS

OK, I bit the bullet and cleaned up the hard drive on my W2K machine and now
have 2.5 GB free. I am planning on replaceing W2K with something else. So now
the question is:
What's the diff between XP and Server 2003? Advantages/disadvantages of one
over the other? This is a standalone machine--not connected to a network...

Re:Ready for a new OS

Server 2003 is for server
XP not
So obvious, not?, but meaning that if Windows XP must be suitable for normal
customers =(gamers, students, workers and super-freaks) Windows 2003 Server is for
administrator, developers, that its, is not for a person with not
knowledge (at least enough) about configure a server...
Serious, Windows 2003 Server can be fast because disable a lot of services, is more
secure&stable, also is the issue about drivers and that, and exist
applications like Exchange 2000 than NOT work under them, so check first
it. However is hard the startup because the security is more high, so is
complicated configure things (at least, i don't have luck with my
asp.net and permission for compiling inside a dir of the web server).
But this is a GOOD point, not bad, is the oportunity to start
building&know a little more about security...

Re:Ready for a new OS

Hi
From what I have seen and experienced is that the various 200x products are
more stable then the XP stuff. The 2003 stuff has the NET Framework included
plus (I think) the most recent fixes. Here at work except for a couple of XP
machines for testing, everything is 2000 pro or server.

Same here. XP box for testing but 2k for development. Worst I have been able
to do to 2k with my dodgy, developing Delphi is crash the desktop - had to
log off & log on again. XP is not bad but you can stuff/sieze it if you try
hard enough.

No; that info may be stale, and I trust this group more...perhaps there's
some Delphi-specific issues to consider.

2003 is faster and doesn't have the Luna (XP desktop) {*word*99} in it.
I've been using it for a few months. No problems whatsoever for now.

Depends on what you want to do with the machine, I suppose. That said,
I have run Delphi on Server 2003 and it was fast. If you are just
doing development or installing applications and have no need to
explore Server 2003 then I'd just install XP.

I remember something said by MS representatives that they've rewritten
2003 Server from scratch. This might mean that serious pieces of code
are different from other OS (including WinXP).

Win2003 is faster in some areas. Have no idea what AV software you
use, but Norton Anti-Virus won't install... they force you to use
Corporate NAV instead ($$). That turned me off, so I switched back to
XP.

I think that is not right. Internally Windows 2003 Server is something like "WinXP
Server". Some of my Delphi components do ugly undocumented stuff. When
adding support for Windows 2003 Server all I had to do is to use the Windows XP branch.
Internally the two OSs are almost identical. Also you can fine tune
Win2003 so that it looks and feels exactly like XP. See here:
www.msfn.org/win2k3
In short words I would say:
Win2003 = "WinXP Server" + patches + different settings
--
www.madshi.net
quality low level Delphi components
extended exception handling
API hooking, DLL injection
undocumented functionality

Re:Ready for a new OS

Some softwares just don't work on Win3k server.
No matter what compatibility modes you set.

XP Pro?
XP Pro has proven to be *at least* as stable as Windows 2000 for me. And
although I have never attempted development on XP home, it shouldn't be
that different in the stability department.

Much prefer Win2K for development, XP is nice for the ease of use but is
not a stable environment.
