There are so many good reason to do a 64bit compiler I don't know
where to start.
Borland only needs one: how they can make money with it, more money
than with the things they are already doing and which they would have
to put on hold.
After all, they already made their decision, using the data they have.
So you'd need equally good data (or better) and a convincing case (not
the mere speculations that have been given here). Note that Borland
already know how much their current products cost them, and how much
they bring them, and you are not privy to that data. So it won't be
very simple.
Borland doesn't need to hear what 64 bit can do for the customer, how
much faster it would be, etc. They know all this, but it doesn't make
them any money.

Dave, that is the point I am making here-- whenever a good claim is put
up, instead of being refuted on the issues, a "Borland knows best" is
issued and derails the conversation in it is tracks.
There haven't *been* any good claims yet. They would need to show how
Borland would make money on it. Nothing we've seen so far says anything
like that.

Maybe I don't understand what you mean here, but Win64 has existed
since the days of the Alpha (if not earlier). it is as proven as the
Win32 API is.
I must have missed when MS last released Win64. When was that?

I have to confess although not having played with it, I thought the
risc versions of the OS system were 64 bit.

Re: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ---> Delphi 2005 x64 Edition?

Last year. The server version have been shipping for years.
A client/workstation version is new.

We should assume that he could afford lots of things. Why
do the mountain thing?
PS By the way I LOL on my first read ;-)

No argument there, but because the Kylix IDE is on a
respirator, I think more pressing things need to be
discussed there.

OK, let's forget about 64 bit Delphi. We first need a 64 bit Kylix now.
OK, guys, fight it out. <g>

Re: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ---> Delphi 2005 x64 Edition?

OK. Here is one sale that isn't happening because I see no
future for me as a native programmer with Delphi. I would
buy D2005 if I thought Borland was serious about the native
side of Delphi (there's $2000). Delphi 7 does everything I
need.
Now what?

Re: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ---> Delphi 2005 x64 Edition?

Windows Server and XP for *Itanium* have been around for a while. 32-bit
x86 apps run in an emulation mode.
Windows Server and XP for x64 are *not* released, although they are at the
RC stage. The x64 version of Windows runs 32-bit x86 apps in native mode
(no emulation) through the WOW64 layer and I think this is the version that
Delphi developers are interested in targeting.
MS makes a distinction between true 64-bit platforms (Alpha, Itanium) and
64-bit extended (x64) platforms (AMD, EMT64).
I've been playing around with Windows 2003 Server x64 RC1 and I am very
impressed. I am running Delphi 2005 (via Terminal Server) with no problems
so far and every other 32-bit app I have tried has run perfectly.

Getting closer, but that is potentially lost money. Not gained money.
