Has anyone used SetupBuilder by LinderSoft (www.lindersoft.com)? Any
comments. We are currently using InnoSetup and are happy but I'm
interested in some of their claims about suport for Vista, Signing
application and installation files etc... Thanks for any help and
comments that are offered.

Re:Install Programs

I'm using InstallAware for all my installs now. MSI compatible, but using
Scripts (and written in Delphi).

Re:Install Programs

Thanks. Which edition are you using if you don't mind me asking?

Re:Install Programs

I think I have Studio, because of the history of upgrade offers I have used
over time. It used to be quite expensive for the top edition, but most
people (including me) didn't need it. You'd have to look at the feature
matrix and your needs to work out which is best for you. But I have had good
support, and very little trouble from my installs with it.

Re:Install Programs

I'd just like to mention that I have been asking some questions on their
pre sale forum, re. what edition I'd need. So far Cadice Jones from
InstallAware has been saying I need Studio, but so far I haven't been
able to understand why. I have asked that exact question this morning so
expect a reply tomorrow morning at the latest.
They seem to provide good pre sale help and the feature set looks very
promising. Also, the price is very nice compared to InstallShield and WISE.

Re:Install Programs

If you don't mind I'd appreciate if you could share with me what
you find out. And if you don't mind sharing, what requirements do you
have that makes you need Studio over Developer or Express?
I had asked if the Express Version supported/integrated with tools such
as Final Builder and the answer was yes. I wasn't sure if it did
because there chart "Which Edition is for you" does not have a check
for Command Line Build Tools. Candice Jones answered my question as
well and was very prompt.

Re:Install Programs

Hmm, interesting. Now I am at work, I have checked out the matrix. The
dialog editor was something I have used, and the de{*word*81} is handy, though
I've only used that about twice.
If you have an existing competitor, then the competitor upgrade prices are
worth using. But I would also ask them if you can pay the difference to
upgrade between versions later. That may make it easy to buy low now and
upgrade when you need more.

Re:Install Programs

Unfortunately, I don't think I qualify for a competitive upgrade as the
only installshield that I have is what ships with D7. I immediately
went with InnoSetup and never looked at upgrading InstallShield or
buying Wise or ZeroG. I can try sending a note to Sales to see what
they offer.

Sure, I can post a summary of my findings here. If you fell like reading

Re:Install Programs

FYI: I received an updated and corrected reply:
The Express edition does NOT work with FinalBuilder or any other
Command Line Build Tool.
The good news is that the InstallShield in Delphi 7 Pro qualifies for the
competitive upgrade.

Re:Install Programs

I have received an answer from Candice Jones, saying in essence that
what Studio does that Express does not is support customization of a lot
of stuff that Express hardwires to some kind of default. E.g. the web
media blocks can be controlled a lot more in detail, re. content and
location.
I'll hold off with more info until I have had time to test the
InstallAware demo. My requirements are, in short:
- Support VB(Visual Basic) 6 projects that access an Access DB via ADO/JET.
- Support preinstallation of the required MSI version.
- Enable me to create both a Swedish setup and an English one, possibly
as one package where the user can select language.
- Support silent installation.
- Support easy web deployment on a simple web server with no extra
plugins or what not.
- We publish an update (a new DB) every month. Our customers will most
of the time not update every month, but ad hoc. So, the installer has to
support upgrades from any one out of SEVERAL old versions.
- Preferably, one single installer should support both upgrade and fresh
installation, autodetecting what to do.
- Support uninstallation of course, and it has to be clean even if
multiple upgrades have been installed on top of each other.
- Preferably support on demand download, i.e. download only what's
needed. If the client already has JET installed, then don't download it.
I think I can do all this with Studio, but I am going to test if it can
be done in a satisfactory way with Express.
