Usually they are not.

So why do it at all?

Indirectly, for yourself. If they know what people want, they might
actually do what people want them to do.

Re: New Borland Delphi Survey

Questions on this survey are very different from past surveys. I
don't remember ever seeing a Delphi survey to ask how you feel about
your most recent Delphi purchase compared to prior Delphi purchases.

The problem is that they ask for a comparison to the previous purchased
Delphi release. At least as I am concerned, the answer would be completely
different if my previous Delphi purchase was Delphi 7 versus D8. Unfortunately, my
previous Delphi purchase was D8, and since the Delphi 8 and Delphi 2005 releases
are both nothing but alpha/beta software, they're equally bad. Delphi 7 is IMO a
pretty good release and that is what I am using for my current Win32 projects.
For .NET development I personally prefer VS 2003/2005 with C# and Chrome.

Yes, I agree.

There are many exciting things happening in the world of Microsoft Windows
today. From .NET and Mobile Devices to "Longhorn" and 64bit computing,
everyday developers are finding more and more new opportunities and
existing
opportunities are growing and evolving.

As always, your direct feedback on emerging technologies and the features,
tools, and technologies you already depend on in your application
development is very valuable to us. Once again it is your opportunity to
provide feedback directly to the Delphi team on a range of topics related
to
Delphi and your application development requirements.
This is a great initiative. Much better than the last poll! Good Survey.
Patrticularly the question 'what one feature would you most like to see in
the next Delphi?'
Some suggestions for next time:
1.22. Are you currently developing for .NET and if not when do you plan to
start?
Yes, currently developing for .NET
No, will start within 6 months
No, will start within 12 months
No, will start more than 12 months from now
No, and I do not know when
No, and definitely will not be starting
I don't think you give us enough options. You'd be better off (IMO) asking
Which of the following best describes your adoption of .net
- never looked at it
- am evaluating it and done some test projects
- am seriously using it and deploying projects
- plan to deploy next projects inthe next X months
- don't plan to use .net - I want to stick with native programming for the
medium term
- don't plan to use .net - I want to stick with native programming for the
long term
etc.
1.24. Do you plan to migrate Win32 based Delphi VCL Win projects to .NET?
Yes, all of my existing projects
Yes, most of my existing projects
Yes, some of my existing projects
Yes, one of my existing projects
No, will not be migrating existing projects to .NET
There is no way any one of those options given would be the correct answer
for me.
On this one, my answer depends really on what happens with .net 2, Avalon,
Longhorn, how many peole have .net on their OS, how I feel about .net over
time, etc.
Also, perhaps an option like
- I don't plan to use .net but can I please have a native Win64 now?
would have got many responses in this ng! <g>
1.37. How do you feel Borland Core SDP fits into your organization?
information on Borland Core SDP can be found at
www.borland.com/core_sdp/
We need Core SDP for our Delphi development team
We need Core SDP for our entire organization including our Delphi
development team(s)
Core SDP does not fit our needs
I'm not yet familiar with Core SDP
Other please specify
This is a loaded question! Are you trying to do marketing in your survey?
You might instead give options like
- we use Core SDP
- we have evaluated Core SDP and are considering adopting it
- we have evaluated Core SDP and it does not suit our needs (which probably
really means it does not suit our budget)
- we have not evaluated Core SDP
I think " We need Core SDP for our Delphi development team" (or entire
organization) does not really describe the current state of where most
companies think they are.
1.40. Which source control management system do you use
None, we don't use an SCM
Borland StarTeam
CVS
Rational ClearCase
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe
Subversion
A hosted service (ie SourceForge) please specify
Other or 3rd party SCM please specify
The recent FinalBuilder server asked whether people used
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe
Borland StarTeam
Serena Version Manager (PVCS)
QSC Team Coherence
Subversion
QuamaSoft QVCS
SourceGear Vault
FreeVCS
JediVCS
SourceOffsite
Surround SCM
Accurev
Rational ClearCase
Perforce
mks SourceIntegrity
Code Coop
ComponentSoftware RCS
Other
None
CVS
I think you could add a few more of the commonly used options in to this
question
1.42. Which documentation type is the most important for your work?
Getting Started
Conceptual overviews
Procedural (How-to)
Application API topics (VCL, ECO API, database classes, etc)
IDE Dialog topics (IDE dialogs including Wizards)
Compiler directives
Compiler error messages
Command line switches
This might better have been checkboxes rather than radio buttons. For me,
there is no one single most important type of documentation. Exept perhaps
the area where I need information right now! <g>

How can you give the first 3 responses when it is not available for
Delphi yet?

Re: New Borland Delphi Survey

I just realized what I'd like to see added in the future....
The one thing most of the developers I work have the most trouble with is
spelling errors in our forms, buttons, etc. It would be nice to have some
sort of spell check of captions, hints, etc. (lord knows how this would be
implemented)....

We welcome participation from Delphi developers using any and all versions

average to complete and can be found at

How can you give the first 3 responses when it is not available for
Delphi yet?
They might have used/evaluated it with Java. Or they might be using parts of
it (eg Calibre RM, StarTeam).
In any case it makes as much or more sense than the options that were in the
original question, IMO.

My last purchase was D7, since then I have been on SA. So the last version I

Compare to the last version you actually use for any project.
