Be careful of what you wish for. One's enemy's enemy is not necessarily a
friend.
No doubt Coates could end up killing Delphi; but from what I have heard he's a
fan of Delphi. I am more willing to roll the dice with someone that really
believes in Delphi than keeping Delphi within the New Borland. ISTM, if
Delphi stays put, chances are it will die a slow painful death.

Then you've heard wrong. All Coates is a fan of is himself. Everything he has
done is in an attempt to raise stock prices so he can dump his stock. He
doesn't care what gets destroyed to achieve this.

He has done more to damage Borland and Delphi than ever to improve it IMO.

everyone working on the Delphi team.
It may LOOK that way from the author's perspective but remember than
none of that article was a direct quote of what he actually said. We
don't know exactly how he worded it. An author can add a completely
different spin to something based on their own biases.
Cheers,

JBuilder: 'Java tools are dead'

Delphi: 'nice little cash cow'
and 'Delphi developers remain incredibly loyal'

- yes, I have been an 'incredibly loyal' solo Delphi dev since D2
but no more... dangerous assumption, Mr. Interim CEO !

Please read that more closely. The only piece attributed to Arnold is the Java
part. All the rest is neither a quote nor attributed to anything he said. It
very easily can be a paraphrasing by the author. Matter of fact the whole
article is curiously void of any quotes, only a few paraphrasing with a lot of
author interpretation.

Apparently from Steve Teixeira?

Steve Teixeira has a different impression.
"I know Bob Coates, and my impression is just the opposite... i.e., he's a
big Delphi fan and has been frustrated for some time over Borland's handling
of the product line. "

Agreed. I would love to have Mr. Arnold make an official statement to the
Delphi community about exactly what he said and what he meant.

I agree, the article was poorly written and sourced. However it was
consistent with the conference call and the eWeek article.

As for the tools business, its a tale of two cities. Delphi is a nice little
cash cow. Delphi developers remain incredibly loyal, and it offers Borland a
window into the Microsoft .NET market. For Java IDEs, it is a different
story. Java tools are dead, long live the Java developer, Arnold said.
</quote>

The only mention of Delphi, and that is to directly refer to it as a "cash
cow" taking the words right out of Brian Moelk's mouth.
It appears Delphi is to ALM what MS-DOS was to Windows.

So.....
it could well be that Arnolds actually loves Delphi and plans on putting
Delphi profits (and all the money that was roamed from it in the past)
right back into Delphi R&D so Danny Thorpe can actually start new
compiler developments without having to fly under the radar to give us
truely great new features like a Unicode Win32/64 VCL that targets both
Windows and OS-X...
It's only that the Yahoo author got it all backward...
Man, for a moment I thought I was having a really bad dream.

AFAIK, Coates has shares in Borland, but not necessarily in a future
Delhi company. He obviously tells people he cares about ALM, and not
about Delphi at all.
My view on this is that Coates is trying to raise the value of Borland
stock, so he can dump it at a higher price.
