Icons a la carte

Why is it that the "good" icon publishers force you into buying sets of
icons, that often contain one's you will never use, instead of letting
you buy only the ones you want? -- And often results in having to buy
multiple sets in order to get all the icons you actually want.
Likely, the answer is that they believe they can make more money that
way, but that should leave customers feeling resentful and taken
advantage of.
The music industry has caught on to the concept of letting customers
purchase only the songs they want to hear, so why not the icon makers?
Even a "choice pack" where, for a fixed price, you could get any X
icons of your choice would be better than what most seem to have for
ordering options now.

I once saw one publisher that had that option, but I just don't remember
where... Try and search a bit more and you will eventually run into it...

Re:Icons a la carte

Excellent Idea, I'd say the same about software bundles or even
component packages.
Get your CodeGear Developer Studio a la carte, sounds good isn't it?

Especially with the new installer: need another feature? Purchase and
download... :)

Re:Icons a la carte

I would love to have my CDS 2007 a la carte:
Delphi / OOP
PHP
Delphi.Net
Optional C++, Java or C#
:-)

Cool, so if I don't need the math unit I can get Delphi cheaper? Could be a
complete nightmare in distribution and pricing.

Yes, you're right, would be better to use a kind of shop system. Each icon
is an article and you can choose which one you would like to order.
Of course there should be predefined icon groups one can add to the wallet,
too, perhaps with some discount option.
But I guess no one would offer such a "feature" in the future.

Well, one might actually think about the "install units", not about
"real units"! :) E.g.: DBExpress, Interbase Express, dbGo/ADOExpress,
BDE, HTML Designer, IntraWeb, ITE, Indy and so on... :)
Heck, I would pay *more* just not to have that .NET (what's the word for it?
ah: cr*p...)

That's about the developers studio packages not about a single tool,
actually I think codegear is going in that direction with single
personalities, Turbos and the devloper studios packages...

Kevin,
Consider trying RentAcoder.com for having someone create your own
personalized icons. I have had some logos and icons done through "coders"
there and they were a bargain.
