BSDN Universal

Borland, please release BSDN Universal. Price it like MSDN Universal and
bundle everything into it. I am NEVER going to use CaliberRM or StarTeam or
OptimizeIt, BUT if they were in my annual subscription, well, then I just
might uncork some of those corollary products and see what they can do. And
I'd love to be able to switch between Delphi 8 and Delphi 7 and C# Builder and JBuilder
and always be in the Borland fold.

Re:BSDN Universal

I'm sorry but I think that Borland misses somthing importat that Microsoft
hase. Borland does not have cash cow like Windows so pricing like MSDN is
let's say almost imposible at least for a company that has to produce some
revenue after all.

How do you think Microsoft got all that cash? it is not just Windows.
M$ started giving away extra products as bundles a long, long time ago. By
bundling the products that you won't use, they have essentially reduced the
chance that you would buy a similar product from another vendor, even if the
other vendor product is better.

Re:BSDN Universal

Maybe not. I don't mind spending $2-3k for Delphi 8 Architect, but I think
Borland would be well served to make that $2-3K get access to ALL the
Borland tools. I bet a lot of "Pro" edition users would shell out the extra
grand if they could get a BSDN. I suspect it would actually /increase/
their license rev stream.

Re:BSDN Universal

And you forget to mention, it is annually...
Guarantied cash? If well organized, planned and supported by quality, it is
a guarantied budget...

Re:BSDN Universal

I agree that there should be BSDN package but I am not sure that it is
possible to be on the same price as MSDN. From years Microsoft is sponsoring
his developer tools division from his income from Office and Windows.
But they have to do it because that is the only way they can support their
platforms and make them attractive to developers. If they sell their dev
tools for price that is 2 or 3 times more expensive, I am sure most of the
people who use them right now to write windows or Office applications would
never looked at them.
Of course I like the new price that Borland set for example for Together for
Visual Studio .NET and I will be happy to see the same to happen with other
Together editions and even with the rest of the products they offer. It is
all up to Borland to decide how to and on what price to sell their products.

Re:BSDN Universal

I agree that for ex. the users that buy Delphi "Pro"
that are not interested in the Enterprise or Architect features,
could spend about $1- $1.5 K for a BSDN subscription
to have access to StartTeam and other Borland products.

I guess you mean BDN Universal? MSDN is from MicroSoft Developer
Network therefore for Borland would be BDN or Borland Developer
Network (which in fact exists as bdn.borland.com).

I guess he could mean 'Borland subscription developer network' instead of
'borland developer network subscription'. Although it is more likely IMO he
had in mind something like what you thought . . .

In any case it does not matter. I do not think they will do it.
Even if they do it will be more expencive than MS offer.

Re:BSDN Universal

It would be interesting to know the number of Delphi Pro licenses vs the
number of Delphi Enterprise licenses. Then to correlate those numbers with
how many Pro users also purchase JBuilder or at least 1 more Borland
product.
I can not justify to my management to buy the Enterprise version of either so
I get the Pro of both. We also get the MSDN every year even though we only
use a few things. The point is perception (especially from the bean
counters). You simply get more for your money. My bet would be that
overall software license revenues would increase.

Re:BSDN Universal

Borland has had such a program before. I know that some companies used to
pay $10k/year for access to ALL Borland products. Maybe this is another
great idea that Borland originated and that MS perfected? In any case,
let's get competitive again by offering BDN!
