Help!! BDE Freeze up on Windows 98

We're having a problem with one of our install's freezing up.  When I try to
run the BDE Administrator, it freezes up.  The install works fine on my
machine (Windows 98), and it works fine on my laptop (Windows 98 Release 1),
but it doesn't work fine on the Windows 98 Release 2 machine.  It's a
Pentium 450 Mhz machine.  Brand new, nothing else installed.  I can start my
program, but as soon as I try to run the customer table, it freezes, or when
I try to run the BDE Administrator.  This is a Delphi 3 application.

Thanks,

I had the same problems some time ago until someone
(Stephen Brown ?) said something about video-issue.
Try to install toher video-drivers and see what happens.
I got rid of all trouble that way...

I got a reply from some one at Borland too, I can't remember the name, but
they said it was a Windows color issue.  Make sure that the colors are at
least 256 or higher, and that should solve the problem.  It did.  The colors
were set to 16, and I uped them to 256, and it worked fine after that.

Thanks for the reply, though.

I had this{*word*154} on Win98 quite a few times - I tore my hair out.
Seems to also happen a lot on Toshiba Laptops as well, regradless of
which OS is used.

Here's 4 situations I found :
1. On some Win 98 machines it was the colour settings, set to 256 or
more colour palette cured it.
2. Update display drivers, especially S3 Virge based chipsets.
3. Beware of Crystal Reports v7, whose intaller installs an older
version of the BDE without checking if there is one newer and totally
screwed up the BDE settings.
4. I couldn't find out what caused it, no explaination.

Most of the time though, after I had reinstalled the BDE suite from
the Delphi CD, the problem went.

Hope this helps.
