Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

What a mess!

After installing D5, as a typical install, I have problems opening
Delphi 5.

I have worked with all Delphi versions, and have never had problems
installing or opening. All other versions on the machine are
uninstalled, also the thirdparty components and there are nothing in the
regestry, when I make the installation.

It's a new installation (tried many times). Normally D5 don't open. If
it opens, it's not the first time, it could be the third time, if it
opens.

The following errors appears.

1. time opening:
  1. Error message:
Exception EAbstractError in module VCL50.BPL at 00012227.  Abstract
Error.
  2. Error message:
    Abstract Error
  3. Error message:
Access violation at address 0040AAF6 in module 'DELPHI32.EXE'.  Read
af adress FFFFFFFF.
  4. Error message:
Access violation at address 0040AAF6 in module 'DELPHI32.EXE'. Read
af adress FFFFFFFF.
  5. Error message:
    Abstract Error
  No opening no more message!

Try open again:
  Error message:
   Abstract Error
  No opening no more message!

Try open for the third time:
  Error message:
   Can't load package c:\programs\borland\delphi5\bin\dclite50.bpl.
Access violation af adress 40003E76 in module 'VCL50.BPL'.
   Read af adress FFFFFFFC.
Do you want to attempt to load this package the next time a
   project is loaded?   Yes  No
  Now it opens!!!!

Then I uninstalled D5, and install D4 again, I've got the message:
Exception EAbstractError in module Install.exe at 00008F49. Abstract
Error
After several times with booting the maschine, I can install D4 but now
it don't work. All the same errors appears like with D5, but now it is
abstract error with VCL40.BPL of course.

At this moment I can't work with any of the Delphi versions.

I have tried copying the VCL50.BPL (and VCL40.BPL) from the CD to the
WIN\SYSTEM32 directory like Aaron Rhodes suggested another user with the
same problem. It worked one time, but the next time I open the program,
it's the same mess, and i don't help copying again.

It seems like a lot of people have troubles with these *.bpl files.
Whats wrong here?

Thanks for assistance,
Arne

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hi Arne,

Try uninstalling both versions of Delphi and re-installing them in order of
4 and 5.  Watch and make sure there are no errors.  Let us know how that
works.

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hi again,

I am told this is easily caused by installing some third-party components.
Have done this?  The error happens when you have a class that has abstract
methods defined as "virtual abstract" and the method is called.  An example:
calling TStrings.Create.  Abstract class should not be used.  I am told the
VCL does not call abstract methods... Let us know.

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hi Aaron
Thanks for your concern. I really hope we can work this out.

I'm not sure you got my message right.
The installation of D5, have done something on my computer.
When I installed D5 I also installed InfoPower2000 for D5.

At this moment I don't have D5 or D4 on the computer, and no thirdparty
components. And now I do this:

I coldstart the computer.
Now I put in the cd-rom for D4, and got the abstract error on the Install.exe.
That is not a good sign!!

Restarting the computer.
Second time it goes OK
After installing and restart, D4 don't open. Abstract error in VCL40.BPL again.
The details (Danish, but I'm sure you know the picture):

I have worked with D4 on many computeres and made many installations, but this

Now I'm working on another computer, where I installes D4 to day, and D5 has
never been on this computer. It works perfect but slower, I would really like to
work with Delphi on my faster computer again.
If I just could get me D4 working again, so I can finish my work before
deadline.

My next project should be on D5 I hope.

Thanks
Arne

Okay, let's uninstall all Borland products and InfoPower and everything.
Check the registry and delete the Borland  key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  Now go into the WIN\system32 directory and delete *.bpl.
Delete any borland directories under Program Files including the Borland
Shared directory.  Now Reboot, then install Delphi 4.  Let me know when you
get to that point.

The installation and the restart was OK.

First message on opening D5: Illegal handling (I think in english) this is the

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hello Arne,

I was with same problem that you (see above). The 'Abstract Error' in my system was
related with a incompatibilty in my memory cards. See you machine configuration.

Most strange is that all others applications (Delphi3, MSVC++ 6.0, C++ Builder,
JCafe, etc) works very well with old memory cards.

I hope this help you

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hi Arne,

In one case that I know of, this was due to an
over-clocked FSB. Do you suspect any over-clocking
issues on that machine?
The reason it might show up in later Delphi IDE's
is that around the time of D4 Update3, the mechanism
of building up the ImageList changed to a lower level
streaming, moving big blocks of memory at a time,
(and therefore potentially stressing the bus and
caches on some machines ).

Hi Carlo

Thank for your concern.
I have followed your case, as well as the others with the same  problem.
Are your problem solved?
Did you change the RAM?

Hi Craig Farrell

Hi Carlo

Thanks for your concern.
There should not be any overclocking on the machine-

Re:Mess with D5 - Abstract error again, again

Hi Arne,

My motherboard not works with PC100 memory cards in bank1 (first memory bank). Then I've
change my memory cards configuration like this:

BANK1:  32MB RAM DIMM CHIP
BANK2:  32MB RAM PC100 CHIP
BANK3:  64MB RAM PC100 CHIP

Now the Delphi5 starts and works fine.
Verify your motherboard manual for these configurations.
