For the C# and Delphi (W32/.Net) I agree, but the C++ Builder part is
clearly less ready... The honesty and blog letter of David I. about it is
nevertheless greatly appreciated.

But.... what else can the do than to be honest?

Simply delay Delphi's release to January or later and give no
substantive reason.

They're marking as a Technical Preview what in fact is a Technical
Preview--I don't see anything wrong with that, and it is better than
delaying the entire release if the other personalities are ready.
I also think by actually saying "we know its not ready" its very
different from last time when although I never got 2005 myself, I was
under the impression it was released as if nothing was wrong..

Exactly! And since that was obviously not an option, they decided to yet
again release a beta.

I wish it were all ready, but if it isn't, then I don't see how
Borland's handling of that situation can be criticized.
Im sure borland do too. However, having the balls to say we dont think
its right .. can only be a good thing

Scheduled releases are simply a fact of business life--a fact that agile
methodologies have accepted to their credit. The right way to meet a
deadline is to develop iteratively, and slip features if required: exactly
what Borland is doing. The idea that a developer wouldn't understand this is
nothing short of bizarre, and reflects poorly.

Yes--both the message and the realistic thinking behind it is a big step
forward.

Who said that was not an option? Do you have some Borland meeting notes
we are unaware of? Is it possible Borland look at all options and chose
the one they felt was best? Shipping what is ready now or wait for the
complete package and ship later. They chose the former. What's the problem?

I'm always amazed at how intolerant developers are of the normal development
process when it is someone else's code that is being developed.

Profitable vs not profitable quarter? I am not saying this is why they
did it but I am guessing that this at least played a part. Of course,
saying this "is not an option" is probably a bit extreme.
Besides, Delphi customers are still driving the product release in any
case. I would guess that C++Builder customers make up a much smaller
proportion of the sales. Although I have not seen any sales figures (for
past releases). Why hold back the release if only the C++Builder
personality is behind schedule? I guess you could argue that they could
pull C++ out of the release altogether and release C#Builder + Delphi
personalities only. That would be messy though and patch deployment may
also be harder (because they would be distributing a larger download
instead of deltas). Nevermind the fact that ripping a personality out
would probably also require additional testing.
IMO they did the right thing- for us and for them. And they were at
least as open and honest about it as they could be.
Cheers,
Kevin.
