RoadMap Welcomed

First:
Thanks to Borland for the well-written and very detailed RoadMap. I
don't really care what specifically changed to make this possible; the
important thing is that there is now a roadmap. I think this will
increase the retention and decrease the defection rate by 20% to 50% of
what it might be between now and 12-31-2007 without the Roadmap.
Second:
In my opinion, the RoadMap is right on target in terms of goals and
priorities. It aims at the widest possible groups of users, so will
make the most number of customers happy as well as optimize the future
CodeGear revenue stream. Acknowledgements and thanks to all who worked
on this at CodeGear, as well as to all at CodeGear who had to stick to
the company line in public but pushed it forward internally.
Third:
I feel apologies are owed to me from many people here in this forum, for
their behavior in making personal attacks, attributing some kind of
malevolence to me because I insisted a roadmap was perfectly legal and
proper from all perspectives.
Fourth:
Acknowledgements that they were wrong are in order from all of the
people in the "big thread" who wound up on the "wrong" side of the
argument, although thanks to Google, that isn't even necessary, since
the whole thread is perpetually searchable.
Fifth:
Thanks for your support to those in this forum who supported the
validity and necessity for the roadmap (even the guy who said he "rarely
agrees with Grossman" but does this time!).
Congratulations to CodeGear... This is in and of itself a major step
forward and also indicates a sea-change in marketing.

I have a perfectly viable plan for World Peace. it is been ready to be
published for some months now, but there are revenue recognition issues
that make publishing the Plan For World Peace impossible, much as I
would love to publish it.

Hmm... CodeGear!
But thanks! :)

If they made personal attacks, they should have been canceled. Apologies
would be nice, but not very likely, unfortunately.

Great! Thanks!

You're not kidding. There were definitely issues, otherwise the road
maps would never have been taken down to begin with.

Hi Jolyon,
Sorry, too late. World Peace (R) has been in beta test (version
0.907536901) for somewhere near 10,000 years now. The developers seem to be
having some difficulty making it stable. Every time they get one bug fixed,
another pops up in an unexpected location. At least with the development of
embedded reporters in version 0.907536832, the history file is no longer
being destroyed by file system bugs in the Propaganda function, however the
advent of the internet has thrown a monkey wrench into the credibility of
the history file. And sometimes, the Mr. Murphy function gets deadlocked
with the There's Always Something function. IMHO, the problem lies with
attempting to achieve "perfectly viable" prior to accomplishing "possibly
somewhat workable". Film at 11....wine, cheese, and RPGs at midnight :^)

Absolutely. It helps to put a damper on negativism. Without a Roadmap,
the worst will always be assumed and people will get itchy feet. FUD in
action.

Interesting if faulty logic. Just because CodeGear was able to find a
way to come out with a roadmap that they were comfortable with does not
mean that there wasn't a real issue that had to be dealt with.
That should go in Wikipedia as the definition of "backpedaling".
Quote
Nor was anyone who was supporting CodeGear (I suppose that would be your
"wrong side") saying they didn't want or need a roadmap; quite the
opposite. I am pretty sure /*everyone*/ wanted a roadmap. They were just
willing to believe CodeGear when CG said there were problems with
releasing a roadmap. Also note that all along CG did say they were
trying to work out those issues, which it seems they did.

Rich
Oh yeah, and then there was the claim that not a single public software
company in the world other than Microsoft had a roadmap.
Backpedal that.
...
In the end, the new roadmap is everything that previously was
impossible: actually it is even better than expected.
I'm just glad it got done.
We all write software, too. We all know that sometimes it doesn't go as
planned. But a plan is still a very good thing to have.

Actually, it happened. There I was,{*word*154} out with the Tooth Fairy,
watching an albino alligator try to crawl out of the sewer drain.
I had just gotten off the phone with the little boy dying of cancer who
is collecting business cards, having previously cashed a whopping check
that I earned by helping out this unfortunate but wealthy individual
from Nigeria who couldn't find anyone else to help him invest his money.
Then I noticed several hundred messages admitting error posted on the
forum. But sadly it was drowned out by the even larger numbers of
messages discussing the sudden emergence of... World Peace.
Ah well, so it goes...
;)

Yep, and another thing: it makes corporate selection of a CodeGear tool
defensible. it is an easy-to-print answer to the "Does it have a future?
comment, and refocuses the argument back on the merits of the tool(s).
Arguing on the basis of it is merits is not a problem for any Delphi
developer.
We just needed Borland/CodeGear's help to counter the no-future argument.
And the roadmap does that in a very concrete manner.
