Turion?

I'm contemplating the purchase of a laptop and making it my primary
development system. The best deals seem to involve AMD Turion (ML-32?). Is
this a good choice? Future with Win64?
Planned environment: Delphi 5, BDS 2006, VS
VMWare, 2 G RAM

Yup. I have an HP dv8130US with Turion 2.2 Ghz, 2-100 GB drives, 2GB
Ram, 128 MB dedicated video memory, 17" TrueBrite screen, built-in
wireless, all for around $1500, including the extra 1 GB Ram I
installed. It works perfect with Delphi and I have not heard of any
issues with any other applications. You will find many Delphi
developers here using AMD processers and I have not heard of any
issues, nor would I expect there to be.

Re:Turion?

Is the Turion similar to the Intel "M" class Pentium or is it like the Celeron?

I was looking at a similar HP system. $1500 is lowest I have seen (not
including the 2 G Ram).
How did you handle the Media ->Professional XP? (I want the IIS for
ASP.Net)

Turion is more similar to the Intel "M" class, but to state it more
accurately is more similar to the Athlon 64 class with some Intel "M"
features.

Re:Turion?

The M class. It won't run as fast because of the voltage cut back. I
have a regular Athlon and it only lasts about 1 hour. The Turion is
suppose to last at least 2 hours on battery.

I was going to get a Turion notebook. The options seem to be:
ACER : Best price but doesn't always have the features (I wanted
a firewire port). They have been starting a price war recently.
GATEWAY : Next cheapest but everyone says their customer service
is *bad*
HP : This was what I was going to get, they seem to have
the best quality and price. However if you only want the 15.4"
screen then get a COMPAQ (Exactly the same except that its
silver) The best price I found was at Compaq.com, plus you
can specify exactly what you want (For example a ML-40
processor only costs an extra $25)
However I eventually chose a DELL e1705, this set me back less than a
$1000 for a Core DUO with 1GB RAM and a lot more features.
One thing I noticed is that it is almost always cheaper to buy the
memory and hard drive from after market suppliers rather than choose
their upgrade price. For example to upgrade the DELL from 512MB to 1GB
costs $140, the aftermarket price for a 1GB DIMM is $100.

More like the M class. It is a very good performer, not hindered in
any way like the Celeron. My laptop performs faster then my P4 2.0 Ghz
desktop. I am going to be using it as a full time dev machine.

I am getting about 3 hours on my Turion machine. Consisdering the huge
display I am pleased.

Right now I am still using Media Edition, but I have the Win XP upgrade
if I need it, or if I decide not to do that I will just use the IIS on
my server.

Well I might have got scammed. I paid 1500 with 1GB Ram, purchased 2
1-GB Ram chips since the 1GB already used the two slots. I was
supposed to get a $300 rebate making the purchase 1500 with the 2GB ram
which was a good deal in deed. While I was in Circuit City the store
manager looked it up online and the rebate was good until the end of
the month. I told him that I hate rebates, and sure enough today I
received a letter from Circuit city saying that the purchase date was
invalid so they are declining my rebate. That is absurd as I printed
out the web page when I bought it. They changed the web page 2 days
later and now it is only $100 rebate. Looks like i am in for a fight.

AFAIK, Windows MCE does include IIS, another point Win64 is a bit of a
misnomer. Windows Vista will be available in both 32 and 64 bit
versions, there is also already a 64 bit version of XP.

If you can afford it, get one with an independent graphics subsystem, rather
than integrated. Integrated tends to clobber your memory bandwidth, and really
does not have enough performance for Vista.
Also, though they are rather rare, get the MT version of the processor - 25 W
thermal versus 35W for the ML.
The Asus A6K(m) seem to be the only model that offers the MT. Asus is the
largest MB maker in the world, and one of the largest laptop makers (mostly
under contract to others).

Mat
