If the customers feel that it might make the product cheaper, yes, of
course.
If the vendor had been selling a product at $400 and then announced
that you could buy that SAME product for $50 less by not requesting
manuals - I suspect almost all would elect for the non-manuals version
and everyone would be happy.
But it never happened that way. Vendors stopped distributing manuals
and pocketed the difference themselves. This often has the inevitable
effect that customers feel ripped off with all the knock-on effects
that has.

Well, it would have made a difference of quite a few million dollars
in revenue.
No - it would have shifted the point at which Borland could have
reported that income and it was clearly vital for them, for whatever
reason, to HAVE to report that income in Q4 2003.

FWIW, Borland hasn't included printed manuals with their products for a
good long time. I think the last set of manuals I have is for D4.

I think the phrase used to describe those sort of decisions is "penny
wise, pound foolish" (or, for the US members <g>"penny wise, dollar
foolish")
If this is true in this particular case (not providing printed manuals)
then why is it that almost all software companies appear to be
following this path?

I'm in full agreement and very happy with that. I must remind myself to
be more precise.
I think shipping a product with help files ONLY is wrong. There should
be some other form of electronic format document as well, such as .PDF.
Thanks for letting me clear that up.

QC is just one of many factors used by Borland to make decisions.

I find it very amateurish if Borland only base their future work on
QC!! It must be a mix of inputs (supportcalls, QC, Newsgroups ect.)
Is it amateurish if they give their users a tool whit which they can
efficiently, and precisely report bugs, and which makes the list of bugs
and workarounds visible to everyone who might need them?
Reports made elsewhere can not be easily browsed by everyone interested,
can't be easily browsed by Borland, can not effectively be voted for or
rated, and can not easily provide a workaround in one place.
It makes perfect sense that everyone uses the same process to report
bugs. It is absolutely inefficient and selfish not to do it, IMO.

Borland have committed it self to deliver quality products - how many of
your clients will buy your product, if they don't get a manual for it...
Borland must admit that Delphi 8 for .net was released before it was
done - if not for all the crashes and lack off on-line help, then for
the missing .pdf documentation. A product in beta might not have
manuals, but a released one certainly has to have. I was very
disappointed not to see a .pdf file, for this "big step into the
feature" as Borland Marketing call Delphi 8 for dot net.
I demand at least .pdf documentation !!!!!

At least for competing products without manuals I can go to the bookstore
and find a shelf full of books available for purchase.
With D8, I don't believe there are any yet. And even with previous versions
of Delphi, I'd regularly visit larger bookstores and never find anything
new.
I love and use Delphi, but it is easy to see I am a bleak minority in the
programming world.
FWIW, I read every hardcopy printed manual ever purchased with a Borland
product and generally only read PDF documents for reference.

I understand this descision less and less as time goes on. I have
found that developing the documentation along with the product (not
after the product is complete) is a great way not only to get
documentation done on time, but to improve the software by having
more eyes on it during development.
Do things always work out perfectly for you?
Have you ever tried to document something as complex as Delphi?

Borland obviously made the decision to release Delphi 8 when the
software got done rather than let it sit on the shelf and wait for the
docs to get done. One can argue the merits of this decision, but I
have Delphi 8 and so I can see the wisdom in it.
