I don't think so. I had the ISO downloaded and burned and VS C# Express with

Then it must be {*word*99}.
Good software takes 8 hours to install, like Codegears software. :-)

I couldn't budget time to play with the beta, but thanks for the link to see
the express versions. Downloading the ISO now. I am sure i will be upgrading
my 2005 Standard Edition but I haven't seen a link for purchase yet.
Thanks for the link.

Re: .NET 3.5 Final released

Microsoft just released .NET 3.5 final:
www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx
Further more the Express Editions of Visual Studio 2008 are available:
www.microsoft.com/express/download/
This is awesome news, now I can install 2008 team suite onto my machine and
no more a need for 2005, and keep working on 2.0 projects. This is
important. 2008 has come a long way and the language enhancements are
awesome.
Thanks,
Shawn

So announcing competitors technology and competitors IDEs is OK, as well
as announcing a tool for Delphi written in Delphi (see thread: As
promised, I just released Denomo 1.0.1) is not OK? Kind of odd, isn't it?
Talking about .Net 3.5 is valid since many Delphi developers will need and
want to code against it.
Advertising VS does break the rules, but in this case, the link for VS was
included in the same post linking to .Net 3.5 information, and it also was
not posted by the vendor or an agent thereof (i.e. this mention of VS was
not, in fact or by intention, an adverti{*word*224}t).
IOW it is not simply the mere mention of a product that is off-limits, it is
*advertising* a product that is off-limits.
Note that an obvious attempt to skirt this by repeating a "mention" at every
opportunity will certainly then be considered an attempt to advertise.

Don't know how long the install took for me. I wasn't around to watch
(it had to download 8 prerequisites).
I know that the Delphi 2007 install took 10 mins to install (I preinstalled
the prerequisites for it though).

I've never ever seen any message praising/advertising VS was cancelled. On
the contrary, there have been many many messages here in the non-tech
praising VS, C# and their excellent features and none of those messages ever
got cancelled. Likewise many times people here in non-tech compared Object
Pascal+Delphi with C#+VS claiming how backward is Delphi and again none of
those messages was deleted by the moderation.
While it is totally understandable that CG doesn't tolerate promoting any
other Object Pascal product here in non-tech, it seems that
promoting/praising Microsoft and its IDE tools to any possible extent is
totally allowed and tolerated.

If *all* they do is literally advertise VS and why one should use it, it is
certainly subject to deletion. If you are able to find any such posts that
were missed, well that can happen occaisonally; we make no *guarantee* that
every post that should be cancelled will be, policing is only our
*secondary, but unfortunately necessary* duty here, the first is to answer
questions and help people as much as we can (yes, even here in non-tech).

Those posts that actually *compare* features, complaining that Delphi
doesn't have one thing or another or that VS does something better, are
constructive posts that very much pertain to *Delphi*, and are perfectly
acceptable here as long as they are factual and constructive in intent
rather than being trolls or misinformation. They are not *adverti{*word*224}ts*
for a competitor.
Personal recommedations, as users of a product, are also perfectly valid
here - again as long as it is genuine, not simply a disguised adverti{*word*224}t,
and the most obvious criteria to judge that is that it is in response to a
specific question, e.g. "What do others here use to do X?", rather than an
unsolicted post).
Do not equate genuine discussion about something with advertising. Third
party tools can be discussed here too, but they cannot be *announced,
advertised and promoted* by the vendors or their agents (authorized or not),
that is what the thirdparty group was created for.

It is working fine for me in a virtual machine.
Yeah, I just installed VS2008 Pro in a virtual machine and had a look
at the WPF designers. It seems to work pretty well for me. Much faster
than smoother than BDS2006 (I don't have BDS2007).

And rightfully so. I just installed and tested Express and the designer
for WPF stinks. it is slow, doesn't paint correctly and the properties
were not intuitive. Delphi has had this sort of functionality (although
it uses a DFM and not XML) for as long as I can remember.
Did you install it in a virtual machine or native? I have been doing my
development with Wpf in a Vista guest for VMWare and while it is slow
(because there is no hardware acceleration) when I take the application into
a Vista or Windows XP native machine and resize and stretch and move and
whatever, it doesn't even use 1% of my CPU (becuase it is hardware
accelerating the Wpf drawing. Keep in mind, however, that I am using a
clean install and... VS 2008 Team Suite, but I doubt that Express is using
different designers for Wpf, they are all based on Cider.
Thanks,
Shawn

I installed it on the machine itself and not a VM. Put a button on the
form which took about 10 seconds before VS became responsive again.
Then dropped a WindowsFormHost on the form with the same result. Added
a Tab/Page control which took a couple of seconds. When I tried to
resize the Tab control over the WindowsFormHost, the painting went all
bonkers. Resized it back off an painting was fine.
There may be a problem with the WindowsFormHost control but aside from
that, 10 seconds to drop a button on a form is ludicrous.
