You're still missing a key data point. Delphi and the other "devco"
products were also helping fund the ALM product development. This was
said many times publicly by our management, so I am not revealing any
trade secrets here. This has been going on since at least 1997.

If the money earned by the products goes back into those products, a
cash infusion would not necessarily be required to either maintain or
improve the status quo.
As long as that revenue stays the same or grows, I guess that would be true.
However, the uncertainty created by the current situation almost certainly
reduces the amount of future revenue that can be expected in the short run,
if not the long run. The big question is whether or not his drop is bigger
than the amount that has been draining off to ALM.
There is something here that makes no sense to me, and that is that if DevCo
(for lack of a better term) really was a cash cow for ALM, why would Borland
eject it? The only way that whole thing makes sense is if DevCo broke away
from Borland, not vice versa. As if the DevCo people got together and went
to the management saying, "Look, we are tired of your mismanagement and we
are going to break away. This can either be an amicable split that leaves
you looking like you were in control, or it can be a {*word*193} mass
mutiny/defection. You choose."

From Coates' statements, it would seem strategic focus became
more an issue than ALM funding perhaps ? Maybe ALM is now making
enough to allow such focus financially ?

Certainly.

No one can say about the long run. DevCo certainly has plans that would
generate more revenue, but it depends on what happens when it is sold
off.

They want higher profit margins, evidently. Less product development
expenses.

That's what's happening anyway, isn't it?

And what power, exactly, would the employees weild, other than mass
exodus or sick outs, or strikes?

Would not that be more then enough?

It would hurt the products if we all stopped working on them.

Not in a short term. Nobody's outside of Borland
going to die if you stopped working for some
time.
As someone on the inside who works on the team, I will lend more credence
to my opinion ;)

hurting it much more I think

ROTFL! :o)
I think you're doing a great job, if I may say so.

I hope so. But don't forget the fate of Turbopower.
That's not really a valid comparison.

Well, remains to be seen.
