Nobody actually broke that trust, though, according to those who looked on

Now how would you know that? Do you associate with these scum-bags? You
do, don't you. I knew it! can not be trusted at all. And with a name like
Thomas Edison, no less. What has the world come to?

Still, it is their product and their company, so it is their call.
I've never argued that. It *is* their call, and they have every right to
make whatever decision they make.

A lost sale is when someone could have or would have bought it.
The company is the one selling. From their point of view, someone has
obtained their product without paying for it, ie it is a lost sale.
I'm sure we could continue this to and fro ad nauseum, but I am done

Neat. it is not a lost sale though because the sale never would have
happened. I am unclear how you're not comprehending this. Just an
FYI-- repeating something that is false will never make it true.

I imagine this is largely due to the fact that you're /wrong/.

To say it another way-- do you, or have you ever, download MP3's? Or
anything that might be termed "illegal" or "immoral"?
I doubt there's a single individual here who can claim to have never
done anything of that sort. If anyone did, we'd collectively laugh in
their faces.
I got pulled over for speeding once. I didn't attempt any lame
justification as to why my illegal act was somehow moral, and thus
acceptable behavior.
Oh, and for the record, every piece of software on all three computers
in my house ... every piece, without exception ... is a legal, licensed
copy.
I gained a lot of respect for intellectual property laws when I started
producing software myself.

As I said, it is because I am not interested in: "You're wrong" and "No,
you're wrong" discussions.

So you just made Leroy's point, you're a textbook example of what he's
talking about-- someone who, at some point, engaged in illegal/immoral
activities but now has purchased (or ceased using) the things he
acquired illegally/immorally.

I'm certainly a good example for it, I suppose. I hardly qualify as a
statistically valid sample, however. That I, one person, suddenly
developed morals and respect where intellectual property is concerned
is no guarantee of this happening in general, which is what his entire
'argument' is based on.
And since he's applying his argument very specifically to what he
imagines is best for Borland, my case is a very poor example - I
purchased every copy of a Borland product that I ever used. Up front.
Even the one I used in my first programming class ump{*word*249} years ago.
That's not a testament to Leroy's position, but rather to Borlands much
cheaper pricing in days past.

True, but we can still complain, at length, about how horrible their
decisions are. And then we can get the canned "you don't know Borlands
business better than Borland does" response (a newsgroup favorite!)..
The good news is that they seem to be making some good decisions
recently. I hope the trend doesn't change (especially WRT BCB).
Quote
Oddly, if this was true (that Borland knows their business so well),
Borland would be as popular today as they were back in ye olde Turbo
Pascal / Turbo C(++) days. Clearly there's been a lot of bad decisions
made, and I sometimes wonder if they ever really stopped (this latest
BS with Software Assurance costing $1000 minimum being the latest
example of shooting their own foot).
That's got 'ta be a mistake, don't you think? If it is not then I hope
the new, sensible management at Borland will jump right on it.

Well, that perspective certainly would make it easy to justify stealing.
