My previous post of having fixed this problem by changing
the datatype to ftFixedChar was in correct.
Our configuration is Delphi 4.03 Client/Server, BDE 5.10, Oracle8i
Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.5.0.0.
We are experiencing a bug in the use of CHAR OUT or CHAR IN/OUT
parameters in stored procedures returned AsString. The return value
contains not only the current parameter but all subsequent parameters as
well are separated by 256+ spaces.
I do know that changing the parameter type to VARCHAR2 will eliminate
this problem. However we want to keep the parameters typed based on the
column it represents.
My workaround has been to define the receiving variable as a short
string with a length of the CHAR column definition.
outstring : string[8]; {variable to receive value from parameter}
The offending code is in db.pas and dbtables.pas as seen below:
When using AsString the datatype is changed to ftString and the
parameter Value contains not only the column I am moving into a
variable but all trailing columns.
In TStoredProc.GetResults (dbtables.pas) the buffer FRecordBuffer
contains the data
returned by the BDE. GetResults loops through the data and eventually
set the
data pointer to 'L'. This pointer is passed to TParam.SetData (db.pas)
which
based on the datatype executes the following code:
ftString, ftFixedChar: AsString := StrPas(Buffer);
StrPas converts null-terminated Str to a Pascal-style string thus all
data up to the
next null in the buffer is copied since there are not any null
terminated strings in the
buffer. On the next pass the pointer in TStoredProc.GetResults
(dbtables.pas)
is incremented to point at '1'. Again this pointer is passed to
TParam.SetData (db.pas) which
again based on the datatype executes the StrPas code which copies up to
the next null.
This process repeats of course until all of the parameters have been
processed.
Now if I place a VarChar2 Out parameter in the middle of the parameters
returned the
data up to the null terminated string, which is the varchar2 parameter
will be copied.
Any parameters occurring after the varchar2 parameter(s) will be
processed in the same
manner as seen in the previous paragraph.

Any information or fixes or confirmations that other sites are
having this problem would be appreciated. I am not really interested
in using a third party replacement for the BDE. I just want
the BDE and db component to work properly. We are upgrading
from Delphi 2.0 Client/Server and this has not been a problem
in the past. Under Delphi 2.0 C/S we are able to trim the
column value returned by the parambyname since it contains
only the column data right padded with spaces and no data
from trailing columns.
