My two cents:  I'd only consider a person a lamer for doing something
like that in two cases:  1.)  Not bothering to *attempt* to understand
what's going on and learn something, with the possibility of not only
understanding but also improving upon, and 2.) not bothering to give
proper credit for used source/units/data/etc. and claiming all work as
your own.  Not only do I think #2 is lame, I also consider it morally
reprehensible.

I think it's plain silly - if I don't put a note in telling me where I
got the original code, I can never find it again after I mess it up so
bad it won't work anymore :)

Hi,

Sorry about posting the same message twice......

I just want to know are you considered to be a lamer if you don't use all
your own work in making games/apps. In other words do all of you only use
your own graphics units? It's just that somehow this doesn't fel right
using other people's work that frankly I don't understand whats going on
even though I am trying.

cheers

George

Your no lamer, your smart (sort of)... using other peoples unit because
they are good, and work correctly saves you time to work on other extra
things.
Ofcourse you should be able to understand a lot of whats going on in the
unit, but you would figure it out while your using it...if you don't
understand certain things in a unit, then leave it alone, after a some
time programming you might understand them, and that is what they call:
Learning.

Just look at the Quake engine, its being used by alot of companies, and
most of them wouldn't be able to create it themselves!

Use what you want, but give credit where credits are needed!

Well, here's what I think:

I use units/source made by other people when I am trying out ideas,
and making small programs for my own use (This is mainly what I
do...).  But when I make something for public use I prefer to use all
my own code, this way I don't have any feelings about supporting my
program on top of other people's work, and also I feel that I have the
right to make it public and be proud of it if I did it all myself (I
haven't really made anything big and complicated that fits into this
category yet...).
