Interbase 7.5 ODBC

Hi,
We are in the process of testing IB7.5 and then looking at upgrading our
clients from 5.6 to 7.5.
At a couple of sites we used the Intersolv odbc that shipped with 5.6 for a
few web apps. 7.5 no longer seems to ship with Intersolv but rather a trial
version of EasySoft.
Is their a 7.5 version of Intersolve available (for free)?
Will the old version (shipped with 5.6) work on 7.5?
I found an old post from Craig Stuntz stating:
Quote
>There is *no difference* between the licenses for 7.0, 7.1, 7.5, and
>7.5.1. Anyone with a 7.x license can use any of them.
>
>IANAL, but AFAICS the EasySoft driver is redistributable and legal for
>*anyone* with a licensed 7.x server to use.

Does this mean that by buying 7.5 licenses, we can use Easysoft without
licensing it ?
Many Thanks
Craig

You can use the version of the driver which shipped with IB 7.5.0.
It's legal to redistribute with any licensed 7.x server, AFAICS. You
cannot download the latest version from the Easysoft site and expect
that to work.

No.

Yes, but it is as slow as it always was, doesn't support as many ODBC
features, and doesn't support any 6.0+ features.

Re:Interbase 7.5 ODBC

Ok, thats great news then.
Only problem is, how do we get hold of IB 7.5.0
Borland South Africa has only sent us IB7.5.1 as well as the borland web
site's download section.
Does borland have a download archive somewhere?
IBPhoenix has an opensource odbc for firebird. Have you played with that on
IB. Any good? I am quite weary of open source stuff.
I'll carry on scouring the web for IB7.5.0, but if you know of any mirrors
that host it I'd be VERY grateful.
Many Thanks!

As far as I know Borland is simply not allowed to redistribute that
file anymore.

I haven't tried the ODBC driver, nor have I heard anything good about
it. I have nothing against open source, personally, but some projects
seem to get more attention than others. The last version of that driver
was released in 2004.

Re:Interbase 7.5 ODBC

7.5.0 is not available for download any more. If you find a copy it
would be an illegal download. :-)

Re:Interbase 7.5 ODBC

but we paid for it. Surely if 7.5.0 has it, an 7.5.1 doesn't then someone
should make it available.

Who? My understanding is that Easysoft declined to renew their
distribution agreement with Borland without warning so Borland cannot
distribute the driver and Easysoft obviously does not want to. Borland
is working on an alternative but it is going to take a little time.

Re:Interbase 7.5 ODBC

As luck will have it, I found an old ISO I made from a trial version of
7.5.0 that was given to me sometime last year from Borland S.A.
This had a slightly different install, and let me install easysoft without
any license screens. There was a redirect to their website to get me to
register an email address. But the actuall software appears to be the full
version.
2 questions:
1: How can I extract this odbc install from the CD, so I can give it to my
technicians to install after they do the IB7.5.1 install?
2: Can someone just check that what I am saying is correct:: We are free to
use this odbc driver on any new IB7.5.1 servers, without any additional
licensing. I am scared that there may have been a communication break down.
And later we find out that we made a mistake and have installed these
licenses illegally and get in big trouble with our local software piracy
police.
Thanks for all the help

The IBPhoenix ODBC driver is actively under development. The latest
version has been released on March 23, 2006. it is Beta though, but AFAIK
the driver is working for many people satisfactorily.

OK, I am just repeating what I see at sourceforge.

Burn the ISO to CD, then I think you can unpack the setup files with
WinZip, IIRC.

Nobody in this group is a lawyer, AFAIK, so if you want legal advice
you need to ask elsewhere. But it seems pretty clear to me as a
non-laywer that the EULA for IB 7 allows you to redistribute the driver
with a licensed IB 7 server. Borland is bound by a different agreement
WRT their redistribution which is why they cannot redistribute it
anymore.
