Have been looking for one for many years now. Ideal would be one that
regularly checks all newsgroups you posted in and shows an icon in the
tray when a reply is available.

XanaNews can achieve similar results by scheduling batches to run every
n minutes.

And how does it alert you?

The Icon in the system tray changes to have a green border around it,
and it can optionally play a sound.

Excellent! Will have to look into XanaNews again...

It is a very good newsreader. I doubt that you will be disappointed.

I'll second that. I was looking around for ages for something to
replace Virtual Access, an off-line newsreader I would used for years.
XanaNews is just the ticket. The only time I use other newsreader
applications is for testing purposes.

Generally I am very happy with my old Agent newsreader and it can do most of the things
your asking about. v2.0 is in beta testing now and supposedly has more features.

It's good but it doesn't have "view threads with new" like Mozilla does.

You can skip to the next thread with a new message or the next thread
with a reply to you with a single keystroke (in XanaNews).

That's good, but not as good as "view threads with new".
IMHO.

You can also hide read posts on XN, which is not the same, but can also
help.

www.atozed.com/elknews has some of what you are looking for - and it
adds on to any newsreader. I use it combined with X News. And both have free
versions. :)
