I was hoping that Outlook had some sort of 'Trusted Applications' list,
but it does not look like it.

This will work, but for a number of reasons it is the last resort. The
main reason is that half of the 'client' apps are on off-site workers
laptops and they use their own dial-up connections to send the main via
their own ISP and that is SMPT for some, IMAP for others etc. If I go
this method, I shall probably set up a single account and hard code the
settings.

Thats the problem with this method. The off-site applications are on-
line once or twice a day for a few minutes, which is why using Mapi is
so appealing.
I never thought I would ever wish that MS apps we less secure <g>
