If the server is down, the web service must be down as well, since the
web interface is part of the server.

Careful now, you're getting a bit technical, Craig will shortly chastise
you for mis-posting ;-)

The only reason I can see that the webservice would be working and
direct connections to the newsserver not working, would be that the
newsserver isn't accepting external connections.
Having said that, I haven't noticed it being down at all <g>

Hi Dave,
I just tested the newsgroups from my work account. And that works, only from
my home account seems to be blocked, also from my home account i can connect
to other news servers. so only the borland newsgroups seems to block me
It looks like somebody thinks i am a bad boy :( although i havn't got a clue
why, is there an email adres or webpage where i can check that information?
Thanx in advance

I've now remembered one other piece of important information: if you
have a firewall that allows outgoing connections on port 80 but not
port 119, you will see the same effect.

The first place to check is your home network and/or software firewall
if you have one.

Also, try with other newsgroup servers such as news://news.microsoft.com
etc.

Hi Dave,
Thanx for the info but that seems not to be the case
The firewall was the first thing i checked, even when the firewall is
disabled the problem still exists.
The problem is that i can reach other news servers on port 119 (Used
news.microsoft.com as a reference), but not newsgroups.borland.com.
To make sure it is not the mailreader i use i also checked Outlook express,
Here i get the same results news.microsoft.com works but
newsgroups.borland.com doesn't. The only reason i can think of is that
somewhere my ip gets blocked by borland for misbehaving, although i havn't
got a clue why.
The only reason i can think of is that i use to download all new messages
from the newsgroups.borland server every 10 minutes, and that that is the
reason i get blocked, although the guidelines don't specify a minimum time
between message downloads,
best regards,
Mario van Zeist.

Are you getting a message that clearly indicates Borland is oing the
blocking, or ar you simply not able to connect? Reason I ask is that
Comcast used to have frequent problems with their DNS which would
render entire areas of the Internet unaccessible to me. You may be
running into something similar. My solution was to temporarily use
public DNS alternatives.

I have the same problem. My home ISP is Comcast, but the server name
resolves to the correct IP. It stopped working yesterday.

Re:News server Down

Hi tom,
It doesn't appear to be a DNS problem. i can connect using HTTP to
newsgroups.borland.com, just not using NNTP (port 119)
The newsreader says Socket error #10060 Connection timed out

I Got a reply from John K that he heard it from more places and that he is
looking into it.

Yep, I am going through Comcast at home too. Couldn't get onto the
newsgroups all weekend, or this morning. Yet I can access them from the
office without problems.
