Ok, I guess I have been under a rock coding, but is Web 2.0 the new
buzz-word-du-jour?
What's it mean?

It doesn't mean just on thing. It incorporates a more interactive concept
for users using technologies such as AJAX (really just a bunch of Javascript
code packaged into a library). One of the key features is posting small
updates and requests back to server instead of an entire page refresh.
Other technologies such as Flex/Flash UI designs are employed in some Web
2.0 implementations.

And as Marco Cantu explained in his Devcon 2005 talk - Intraweb has had this
kind of technology for years.

I thought it meant the company had one of those neat logos with a
reflection. :-)
Seriously, though, in addition to the newer technologies, its supposed to
imply community driven/social networking style applications. Flickr,
MySpace, etc. Basically a site where the content is developed by the
community. But like most other buzzwords its so broadly used that it has
no practical meaning. But it'll get you a meeting with investors.

I heard about it a few months ago. A poll said that still many people
didn't know what Web 2.0 was, and this was used to demonstrate how
web-unsavvy the population is.
Then I realized I didn't know either. <g>
Wikipedia was no big help, IMO. I think no one really knows what it
actually is. Probably just the many new things on the web, instead of
plain old HTML pages with text and some pictures.

That is the core of Web 2.0, indeed. <g>

It does not mean anything. It is a buzzword as you suggest.
Prefer discussing specific technologies such as 'background requests' instead of vague
meaningless technologies such as '.Net' and 'Web 2.0'.
Personally, I work on Web 4.0 websites. I am ahead of you all.

In the mind of the Googleplex, the generations of the web proceed something like this:
Web 1.0: web as extension of PC hard drive
Web 2.0: web as application platform complementing PC operating system and hard drive
Web 3.0: web as universal computing grid replacing PC operating system and hard drive
Web 4.0: web as artificial intelligence complementing human race
Web 5.0: web as artificial intelligence supplanting human race

Here are the generations of the web from the Semanticist perspective:
Web 1.0: web as people talking to machines
Web 2.0: web as people talking to people (through machines)
Web 3.0: web as machines talking to machines
Web 4.0: web as artificial intelligence complementing human race
Web 5.0: web as artificial intelligence supplanting human race
