Like programmers who code for domains they don't really understand, I'm
thinking. Bad programmers can have a lot in common with bad MBAs.

I think so, yes. A common thread for all three is that being good requires
at least two areas of expertise: both knowing how to do what you do (manage,
program, teach), and no less important knowing the specific
industry/area/subject matter you're doing it in.
