But it is not innovative. MS had already invented .net, there were
already development tools (VS.net) for it, it was simply a logical
evolutionary progression. It doesn't push the boundaries.

I don't see how Borland's prducing Delphi.net pushes any boundaries.
It just catches up with boundaries others have already established.
Except perhaps for the ECO/MDA and Janeva part, in the Architect SKU.

By that logic, I am not sure how much innovation was involved in the
invention of .Net. It isn't the first virtual machine on the planet
and Microsoft didn't develop it from scratch.

To be honest, I don't know what was introduced in what version, until I
go back to a previous one and stumble on to something that wasn't
supported.
If you're really interested in what Borland has added to the different
versions, you might look for the SKU comparison charts (not sure where
to find the older ones) and compare them between versions 5 and 7. I'm
sure some of the new features might be considered innovative.
Comparing the VCL hierarchy diagrams would give you an even more
detailed picture of how the class library has changed.

Yes well, I would probably agree with you there! <g>
But it is a real progression on what MS were offering before in development
tools and languages. And from my perspective, it seems like a lot of .net
(remoting, asp.net2, compact framework etc) probably is innovative. I
readily admit I am not expert enough in all these .net technologies to
really say very definitely on that. Seems like it though . . .

Agreed. I think Microsoft is being innovative with .Net, even if they
didn't invent the concepts and bought the initial implementat5ion from
someone else.
Just as I think Borland is innovating. Both with the things they build
themselves and technologies they acquire.
Seriously, take a look at the feature documents for the different
versions. And have you seen the JBuilder IDE lately? The Together
integration (to name one thing) is awesome. Some of these features
have already made their way in to C# Builder and Delphi 8, with more on
the way.
