I want to format the hard drive on an old machine and reinstall a newer
version of Windows on it. When I go to a DOS prompt and:
format C: /S
I get an err msg about Windows being in use or computer being used by
another person, therefore it cannot format C
So how can I?

Doesn't the Windows boot disk offer to do it?

Format it as part of the windows install procedure (from a CD). You will be
prompted in the process.

If Dos allowed you to format the boot drive think of how easily a trojan
could wipe out your harddrive, you need to boot from another harddrive,
floppy or CD

Re:Format C: question

Restart
Keep hitting F8
When the boot menu appears choose
"Command prompt only"
Or you could insert your Windows CD. It has the option of formatting the
drive etc.

When you select new version of windows on the isntaller it will offer
you your disk, you have then the opportunity to format it.
Windows wont let you format the disk you're currently running under -
failing that, boot off an old dos floppy

Re:Format C: question

If you are installing Windows XP Pro then just insert a bootable CD and when the install screen appears
choose to delete the current partion and then recreate a new primary partion and then install the OS
onto to. Everything else is on automatic from their on.

Don't forget to delete all your partitions with FDISK ;)
