Quick Report grouping a query by date period eg week or month

How can I take a query with report lines by date and group the lines by time
period, eg hour, day, week, month etc., along with a group total of numeric
fields in Quick report?

I have tried using 'compute by' in local sql for numeric values, and this
wasn't accepted, but at any rate I couldn't use this for date grouping, so
suggestions please?...
