Paranoid about Microsoft

So is it just me, or isn't is suspicious that Microsoft hired some really
good guys away from Borland and then one of their former employees (Tod
Nielsen) goes to work for Borland and comes up with the idea to get rid of
what's left of the development team?
Isn't that like squashing your competition?
Perhaps this has already been discussed because I haven't been following the
forum lately.

I stick by my prediction that he wants to lose the IDE business so that he
can sell the rest to MS.

M$ doesn't have an incentive to squash Borland,
however Borland without the IDE business would perfectly
fit on M$'s shopping list.

absolutely. The ALM stuff is their single biggest missing piece.

Re:Paranoid about Microsoft

I'd agree with you if the ALM tools were just CaliberRM (since VS TS
has no requirements management). But I still think there's a little
too much overlap for comfort. What happens to StarTeam in such a
scenario? MS will still have to kill several overlapping products if
they were to do that.
But still, it is not as much of a stretch with the IDE tools
conveniently out of the way, and Tod making no bones about wanting to
work more inside VS.

Not to fuel the speculation, but Microsoft owns both Great Plains and
Navision accounting, so overlap is not unknown to them.
That said, I don't really think MS makes a lot of sense as a purchaser.

Reading both descriptions, they hardly overlap each other.
They're both middle-tier accounting products. They were each other's
principle competitor before Microsoft bought both companies. As my
company resells Navision, I have a bit more familiarity with the
products than one would gain from reading a Microsoft product
description.

Right about that, you are.

Reading both descriptions, they hardly overlap each other. Great Plains is
for the mid-size and larger businesses with more complex business processes.
And, Navision is for the mid-size and smaller businesses with somewhat
simple needs.

They're getting there, but still have some ways to go. Look at what they
offer with VS2005 Team Suite.
