256 color images in high color mode

Greetings

I am developing a program,in Delphi 1 that displays multiple animations on a
canvas.
These are all 256 color images. When the computer is switched to high color
mode, eg 16 bit or true color, the animations slow down considerably. This is
not unexpected, but is there a way of switching the system to 256 color mode
while the program is running.

Depends on the OS version and display driver. Some drivers under Win32
can manage this, but not all. And Win16 can't do it period. So don't
try it. Besides, if the user wanted to be running in 256 color mode,
they would have set up their system accordingly.
