16 color icon limitation of Delphi 5?

I've created a 256 color windows desktop icon for my delphi 5 program (32 x
32) which works fine. However, trying to using the same icon for my project
icon (project/options/application/icon) has not been successful. Delphi 5
seems to refuse any icon with more than 16 colors.

Can this be correct? Is there a way around this?

That's not true.
Maybe your Windows display icons in 16 colors, but Delphi accepts all kinds
of icons.
