Pet Hate

I read this and other related Newsgroups to find info and help others.
There is a lot of noise, but there is some very useful stuff.

What I really hate though is someone who comes along and says 'Hi I have
this problem xxxx. Please mail me direct with the answer.' Now is it
just me or is this just a little bit selfish? I don't know how long it
takes to post messages and see them answered, but if someone is prepared
to send an answer shouldn't we all be able to read and maybe benefit
from it?

I suppose emailing and posting is a compromise. What does anyone else
think (email me directly- NOT!).

David

I agreee with you.  I read the newsgroups to see both the questions and the
answers. When I post an answer, I always post to the group.

David,

Agreed... I usually just ignore the 'mail me with the answer' and
post directly to the NG. I say 'usually' because if someone has a
problem and sounds desperate for the answer (or mentions that they
don't have easy access to the NGs), I may post the answer and cc
them a copy by e-mail.

What I _really_ dislike, though, is when I answer a question in the
NG and someone mails me directly for further discussion, but also
places the post in the NG. I spend my time answering the further
question in private e-mail only to find that the question still
exists on the NG on my next visit...

You should probably consider that it is different from case to case.
I earned a lot of flaming some weeks ago for my way of doing it. I
make a rather big effort to maintain the TP-links URL for the community
to give additional hints and hold the answer mails short. One of the
NG members wished that I shall post the messages only directly. Then
another came in and flamed against me, and I sent the answer privately,
so he was angry - I should post it to the NG only...

You can follow some very long threads here, loosing the original
object more and more. And often it is a crying wall in Jerusalem
(sorry, don't know the correct word) for all the frustrating things
which have collected in the soul...

You seem to think that your time is just as valuable as his
time. Don't know where you got that idea...

I fully agree. Most posters have a spam guard in their E-mail adress and
expect me to type an answer twice.( A message posted might help more poeaple
then a message mailed, so posting has more priority)  My Newsreader (News
Express 2.0) gives me the possiblity to post and mail at the same time. This
is what I use. If it doesn't work because of a spam-guard they're out of luck.

Yes....I have to agree...it is a drag to see someone ask a question only
to try and look deeper into the thread and not to find anything there.  I
don't think that by asking to answer via direct e-mail is being selfish
though...they just probably aren't thinking that others may be interested
too. (...hmmmm...or is that the definition of selfish...you may be right!)

But it's also a drag to have to look through the newsgroup for your
answer...I think that by sending the answer to both is the easiest and
keeps more people happier..and doesn't take much more effort.

Cheers!

What I do is post a reply, then send them mail saying, "In accordance with
standard Usenet practice, I have answered your question in the newsgroup,
where others can also benefit from it and comment on it."

Yeah sure.  But you should still not have unkind feelings toward
your doggy or kitty.

Re:Pet Hate

Since Netscape makes it easy to "Post and Mail Reply," I don't see the
hassle (unless you're sending attachments, or something like that).  Any
time I see a question posted, I assume that email would be appreciated,
and I answer both ways.  I know I am grateful whenever someone emails me
with a reply to my questions...

Sure--you should (probably) always post the answer on the group as well!
