You should probably consider that it is different from case to case.
I earned a lot of flaming some weeks ago for my way of doing it. I
make a rather big effort to maintain the TP-links URL for the community
to give additional hints and hold the answer mails short. One of the
NG members wished that I shall post the messages only directly. Then
another came in and flamed against me, and I sent the answer privately,
so he was angry - I should post it to the NG only...
You can follow some very long threads here, loosing the original
object more and more. And often it is a crying wall in Jerusalem
(sorry, don't know the correct word) for all the frustrating things
which have collected in the soul...
