.bmp files as a background

displaying .gif/.jpg/.bmp files as a background

If there is an FAQ that has this info in it, please forgive the post
and point me at the FAQ. Otherwise, is there a library, or example of
how to display image files (of any of the listed file types) without
having to master image file formats?
