Great blog Anders

I'm as frustrated as the next guy with Borland's attitude towards the
C++ community over the past years. But I can't understand why people
are coming down on Anders. Some people here actually wish he would have
said nothing. Amazing!! We've gone from absolute silence as if the
security of the nation was at stake, to a couple of Borlanders telling
us there is an open letter coming next week. This is a shift in the
right direction and I applaud it.
I for one like to read several paragraphs from a Borlander on C++. I
hope he "chats" more about Borland and C++, as he tests the bounds about
what he can print.
Way to go Anders, keep it up!

I'm not 'coming down' on anyone, i'm just not wetting my pants with
e{*word*277}ment yet. We've been told about a 'new information policy'. Thats
great, show me some information.
When I see the info, then maybe I'll get e{*word*277}d.

I would like to, so long as the several paragraphs tell me something new.
This somethign also has to be reasonably clear and not wishy washy
ifs/maybe's. We've had if's/maybe's since the dawn of time, more of them is
not indicative of a new info policy.
Don't get me wrong, if this new info policy does kick in (and kick in well)
I'll be a happy lad. Until then...
Btw, this is horribly on topic to be posting in BPOT <g>

Which goes to show that its WAY too early in the morning to be reading the

I agree. Borland should have kept its mouth shut until it had something to
day.

Neither do I understand the e{*word*277}ment some people have because of the
announcement of a second letter.....

I never said I thought they should keep their mouth shut...
I have no problems with the little they've said, I just don't think theres
anything of substance yet and as such nothing to get overly e{*word*277}d about.

Yeah well... I'm far from e{*word*277}d by the announcement, but still look
forward to reading it.
But other than the useful info in the open letter (when it comes), what does
the release of an open letter (and the hush hush while we wait until it
actually comes out) tell us? It tells us that *nothing* has changed. If
people are now allowed to say what they want and deal with the ramifications
later, why wait for an open letter? So please Borland, show us that this new
information policy actually means something.
If this new information policy exists why aren't they scheduling things like
developer chats/QA sessions? Why isn't there more info on the blogs etc? I'm
being a little too expectant given that most of this came to light on a
Friday and I assume these guys don't work on the weekend, but after living
in the vacuum we've been in for so long, so what.

I don't completely agree with that. If the policy change came about
recently then we ought to reset the clock on the open letter. My thought is
that prior to the change in policy no information would be released so
nobody had to be prepared to write something.
Now that the policy is to be more open people have to prepare to be
informative and that takes time. Someone has to take the time to review
announcements if only to check spelling and grammar. For now I am assuming
that this policy change is less than a month old in which case the letter
sounds like it will come out in a reasonable time frame.
However I am suspending final judgment until I see the letter. Even then I
will keep a wary eye on Borland. Speaking as someone who's used their tools
since TP2 for CP/M they just went too far this time. I'm not going to jump
back on their bandwagon until I've had a chance to run alongside for a year
or so.

I don't completely agree with that. If the policy change came about

that prior to the change in policy no information would be released so
nobody had to be prepared to write something.
But why? The policy has supposedly changed so that anything that is said
doesn't need to be vetted 4,000 times by everyone from the janitor to legal.
Supposedly they can just say things at their leisure now, without having to
get approval first. Making us wait for an open letter is in no means
indicative of change. We've always had open letters..

It doesn't take a month for someone at borland to provide even the breifest
of responses to some very straightforward questions. I'm surprised that some
of these answers weren't given the day this new info policy kicked in.
Spending a month dotting i's and crossing t's is to this new info policy as
Borlands patches/support of BCBX is to their promises of 'better support'
etc after its release. Despite saying things would be different with BCBX,
they stayed the same. If all we get is an open letter, then things haven't
changed at all.

As will I. A new info policy is encouraging, *when* I see evidence of it
being implemented.

Borland is a large company and can't make a policy change as significant as
this in a matter of hours. I'm prepared to give them a month or two to get
the information flow started. I would expect that once information starts
to flow out of a given part of the company it should continue to flow in a
timely manner.

I'm just antsy for some info! Until that time, news of said policy change is
nice. But thats it.

Actually you didn't. You said:

I think you meant to type say but instead type day, which changes the entire
meaning of the sentence:-)
