Visual Studio Express

Anybody downloaded the free VS Express Beta apps? I'm downloading VC++
Express Beta and SQL Server Express Beta as we speak. These are generally
MS's new "free"versions of their tools. They don't have all the bells and
whistles of the full versions but according to MS, VC++ has the same
optimizing compiler that the full versions will have. I have stuck with
BC++ 6.0 since it was realeased, but it is an absolute joke what Borland has
done to it's C++ customers. Or should I say, hasn't done for it's
customers. Let ya'll know how this goes.

That is incorrect. They are beta previews of development product versions for
non-professional programmers and students, for which pricing has not yet been
decided.

Winforms-based RAD is in there. But these Express versions are not intended for
professional developers to use.

Are we supposed to all move over to MS's newsgroups?
I would just as well here directly from Borland C++ Builder users as to
how their transition to Microsoft development tools is going. If we are
all going to be forced to go there, we might as well stick together.

Microsoft have said that they'll be priced for the hobbyist/student market.
Read that as cheap, which suits me just fine. ;-)

Lots and lots of RAD in this product. The main negative is that the Express
tools are .NET-specific. So you can't use (say) VS.NET Express C++ Edition
as a replacement for C++ Builder.

True. But it's worth remembering that Turbo Pascal 1.0 wasn't originally
intended as a professional's tool either. The rest, as they say, is
history. ;-)

Are you a hobbyist or student? For some reason I was under the impression
you are not.

It's just a trap to get developers on the slow starting .NET train...
Very smart.

AFAIK, you can download the Platform SDK
and do Win32 with it.

Why is your sig line usually longer than your messages? You must not

That doesn't include abstraction libraries like MFC. I doubt a lot of (not
limited to) entry-level developers will use plain Win32 API when they have a
configured 'Visual IDE' for WinFX.
