How much work on optimiser?
Little - most work is on language conformance, libraries and IDE.

When will QC come out of beta?!
- QC clients embedded in Delphi2005/JBuilder are NOT beta
- Web Client will always be a beta, as it is where new features are
piloted!

Does Borland take Linux seriously?
Focus is currently on Kylix community project, and
freeclx.sourceforge.net

Some work on building device drivers in BCB

Will get an updated platform SDK

Looking at XML documentation generation out of the compiler!!!

Looking at how help can be improved in Delphi studio in general

Profiler for C++ personality?
If so, it would be a 3rd party bundle
OK, chat just finished. I stopped keeping up with the comments here
about halfway though, catch the rest on the bdn site.

Re:Re: CBuilder chat in 10 minutes!

Fixing the utilities? There are no utilities whatsoever at the
moment. The only one converts the DLL libs only :-( .
Any way, we are using already an utility build by us to convert VC++
coff files to BCB and Delphi.
If anybody has such need we can talk. Otherwise we plan to use it for
our own needs. We will be willing to share knowledge if anybody from
Borland expresses interest.

Can we expect VC COFF library support?

No more than today, although fixing some utilities that convert COFF
files.

It depends on your perspective...
I asked a question at the end (that I'm frankly quite surprised that
they answered) about whether or not they had learned from the CBX
debacle that "when it's ready (tm)" just doesn't cut it...
Unfortunately, they either intentionally or unintentionally didn't 'get'
the question, because their response was along the lines of "the only
firm timeframe we have is how long it takes to manufacture disks", so
they don't discuss dates until it's released to manufacturing.
I'll have to try that one on MY clients sometime, I wonder how well it
will fly... Oops, I'd rather stay in business, maybe I won't try that one.

P.S. I was heartened to see that this chat actually occurred, and most
of the answers were dealt with 'reasonably' (not that I agree with all
of them), but the WHOLE POINT of these types of things is information
exchange -- and one of the most IMPORTANT pieces of information that
customers need is schedule. I'm really tired of hearing all of the
"we're striving for an absolute high-quality product, so we don't have a
timeframe" -- because that lost all credibility when CBX was released.

Re:Re: CBuilder chat in 10 minutes!

I was trying to ask if they plan to do some marketing with this
product, 'cause if they just say here it is, go buy Delphi 2006, I don't
think they will sell a single copy to any new C++ developer... It is the
same as what was, go buy Kylix, and the reasonable question back, "What
the hell is Kylix". If they want to sell, they have to call it Delphi
Studio, or Delphi C++ edition or something along those lines.
I am sure they can make a product, but can they sell it? They have
been vary bad at selling their visions so far, no mater how good or bad
they ware. When was the last time you have heard about what VCL.NET can
do for you? When was the last time somebody was talking about pushing it
into other 3dt party products, or VS.NET ? They are just not good
salesman, and they have to improve if they are to succeed.
As for the schedule, I agree, but I will somewhat accept them not
committing any further at this point, as it is really early. Having it
in the next Delphi release is somewhat of a reasonable commitment at
this point.
With best regards,
Boian

The "when it's ready" thing reminds me of Lily Tomlin on Laugh-In,
"We don't have to be nice to you. We're the phone company."
We're all in the software business. We all have deadlines. For us,
if we aren't going to meet the deadline, we have to hire temps
or work 80 hour weeks.
If Borland wants (as they constantly tell us) to change our perception,
they'll have to do something about that.
The rest of the chat seemed more or less reasonable and not
unexpected. Moving to Dinkumware sounds good. Supporting
Boost and some modern libs does as well.

Re:Re: CBuilder chat in 10 minutes!

The reality of software development is that the farther you are out from
a release, the greater that date is to change. Putting it
not-so-eloquently, "stuff happens". Just take a look at the Longhorn
Beta. Oh wait, there IS no Longhorn Beta. Wasn't Longhorn originally
supposed to ship in 2004?

I don't know how to make it any more obvious than the front page.
bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,32958,00.html
I had two live chats to post, so it took a while.
For future reference, it is unusual for the replays to be posted on the
same day. I've been lucky enough to find the time to do that for the
last few, but a delay of several days is more likely.

Thank you. I was not aware it would have to be done manually -- I guess I
figured it would be automated!

It's somewhat automated, but I'm not happy with the default output. The
audio definitely requires editing because of the lead-in music, and
that's not likely to be automatable. Actually publishing the final
HTML, links, and audio is something I'd like to produce a little
utility app for (like I have for the BDNtv stuff) but I simply haven't
had the time.
I suppose if I'd waited a few days before posting the first interviews,
I could have adapted the BDNtv app to do it :)
