Try this (example is using J2SDK1.4.2_03 when installed on C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03
C:\>JAvA_HOME=C:\k2sdk1.4.2_03
C:\>PATH=$PATH;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03
Test it
C:\>java -version
If you get back something like
Java (TM) Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03)
....
...
Then it is now on your Path and JAVA_HOME is set.
Notice, howver, you will lose these settings as soon as you exit a
Command/DOS prompt. To make it permanent, you will need to go to Control
Panel, System, Advanced, Environment Variables and set the
PATH, CLASSPATH to contain the Java path and library information as per
above. DO NOT CLEAR THE PATH, append the java entries to the end of it.
DO not Forget to add JAVA_HOME under System Variables, if you do not see an
entry which currently exists.
Click New which wiil bring up a Form. For Variable Name: JAVA_HONE
Variable Value: C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03
if PATH and CLASSPATH ARE NOT LISTED, ADD THEM AS WELL.

You may have to reboot Windows for this to take permanent effect..
